When talking about how CBD works within the Skin, it’s important first to understand a vital System to our skin & body, the endocannabinoid System.
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
The ECS in the skin is made up of the same three components as the ECS in other parts of the body: endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors, and enzymes. The main endocannabinoids in the skin are anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). The main cannabinoid receptors in the skin are CB1 and CB2.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is like a “regulator” in our body. It helps maintain balance and stability, almost like a thermostat, to keep our body and mind in a healthy state. Think of it this way: The ECS has receptors throughout our body and brain, kind of like sensors. When something in our body gets out of balance (like pain, stress, or inflammation), the ECS kicks into action. It produces natural chemicals called endocannabinoids to bind with these receptors and bring things back into harmony. So, you can picture the endocannabinoid system as the body’s way of fine-tuning and keeping everything in check, like a biological thermostat that helps us feel good and stay healthy.
It is also present in the skin, where it plays a role in regulating a variety of functions, including:
- Skin barrier function: The ECS helps to maintain the skin barrier, which is a protective layer that helps to keep out harmful substances and moisture.
- Inflammation: The ECS helps to regulate inflammation, which is a natural immune response that can be harmful if it is not controlled.
- Pain: The ECS helps to regulate pain, both acute and chronic.
- Aging: The ECS may play a role in skin aging, as levels of endocannabinoids decline with age.
- Acne: The ECS may play a role in acne, as it has been shown to regulate sebum production.
- Psoriasis: The ECS may play a role in psoriasis, as it has been shown to regulate inflammation and cell growth.
The ECS & CBD
The skin’s endocannabinoid system helps to regulate various cellular processes including proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis or cell death. Thus, an imbalance of this system is responsible for the occurrence of chronic skin conditions such as advanced aging, psoriasis, and eczema, and developing targeted cannabinoid therapies may help to control the root of optimal skin health.
Many skin conditions are inflammatory and the anti-inflammatory effects of cannabinoids on skin cells have been demonstrated. The active ingredients in cannabis, such as THC and CBD, can interact with the ECS in the skin. THC binds to the CB1 receptor, while CBD binds to the CB2 receptor. These interactions can lead to a variety of effects, including pain relief, itch relief, inflammation reduction and overall balance and support to other skin systems.
DRY SKIN
CBD can help moisturize the skin. Dry Skin is a common problem that can be caused by a variety of factors, including environmental factors, Medical conditions, and medications. It Will also encourage the cells to repair Any damage and increase hyaluronic Acid production.
OILY SKIN
CBD helps to reduce sebum production by Interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) While inhibiting overproduction. It also helps control the microbiome. An imbalance in the skin’s Microbiome can lead to oily skin. CBD helps to Balance the skin’s microbiome by interacting with The ECS.
SKIN CONDITIONS
Inflammation is a major factor in many skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. CBD helps to reduce inflammation by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). CBD can also help reduce itchiness and scarring.
ACNE
Acne is a common skin condition that is caused by excess oil production and bacteria. CBD not only inhibits overactive oil production but it’s also shown to be anti-microbial. CBD may help to improve acne by reducing oil production and fighting bacteria.
ANTI-AGING
CBD is a super antioxidant. Antioxidants help to Protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. CBD also helps improve skin elasticity. As we age, Our skin loses elasticity, which can lead to wrinkles and sagging skin. CBD helps to improve skin elasticity by increasing the production of collagen and elastin.
POST-TREATMENT
CBD is amazing for post-laser treatment because it has anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, moisturizing, and antioxidant properties. It can help to reduce redness, swelling, pain, dryness, and flaking that can occur after laser treatment to help decrease adverse events.
What is CBD?
- Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound derived from the cannabis sativa plant
- There are more than 100 identified cannabinoids in the cannabis plants, but not all interact with our body
- Antioxidant powerhouse, patent by the USA as a super antioxidant
- CBD does not produce psychoactive effects associated with the plant
Types of CBD
FULL SPECTRUM
Contains all the compounds, including traces of THC. Considered ‘The Natural CBD’ because it’s less processed. CBD+
BROAD SPECTRUM
Range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, but no THC.
CBD ISOLATE
Purest version of CBD is often ground up and sold as a powder.
Full-spectrum CBD is found to be more effective than broad-spectrum CBD because it contains the entourage effect. The entourage effect is the idea that the different compounds in the cannabis plant work together to create a more powerful effect than any one compound alone. THC is extremely important to have within your products because it binds to the CB1 receptor in your ECS. Full-spectrum CBD is also much less processed.
