Causes of Facial Aging and How Botox Can Help
Facial aging is primarily caused by factors such as collagen loss, repetitive facial movements, and environmental damage like sun exposure. Botox helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles responsible for these expressions, resulting in a smoother, more youthful look. Are you considering Botox to help treat your aging skin? Meet our board-certified physician Stephen Weinman, MD, and licensed medical aesthetician Jennifer Pena. There are many cosmetic treatments available for an aging face and a trained, licensed practitioner can help you figure out which one will be best for you. Your skin’s aging is affected by many things such as your daily habits, your genetics, and the environment, particularly exposure to the sun. Regardless of your age, the best strategy to help combat the effects of aging is prevention, with a focus on sun protection. Early signs of aging can be minimized with the use of treatments that include vitamin C, retinoids, and alpha hydroxy acids. If you have moderate to severe sun damage on your face, you could benefit from medspa treatments such as chemical peels, microneedling, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, or ultrasound energy devices.
In the case of deeper facial lines, there are more advanced treatments available to help minimize the appearance of wrinkles. These treatments can include botulinum toxin, or Botox, and injectable fillers that include hyaluronic acid injections. There are also surgical options such as brow lifts, facelifts, or cosmetic surgery on your eyelids. The choice is ultimately up to you on what you want to do and how far you want to go but it is best to discuss your options with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who can provide you with the information you need to help you make your decision.
Aging is inevitable as we get older, and while we can’t stop it from happening, we can help slow down the aging process using preventative measures. Some factors can’t be helped, such as our genetics, but others can be such as our lifestyle choices and our environment. Using some simple tactics, your skin can stay looking younger, and longer. First and foremost is protecting your skin from the sun, whether by covering it up or using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30.
Additional considerations include quitting smoking, avoiding making the same facial expressions repeatedly, eating lots of fruits and veggies for a well-balanced, healthy diet, minimizing your alcohol consumption, exercising regularly, following a gentle skin cleansing regimen, applying moisturizer every day and washing your face twice a day. Seeking the knowledge of a trained dermatologist can also provide you with options to help minimize the effects of aging on your skin.
Botox serves many functions and can be injected into many different areas of the face to help minimize and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The most common places for Botox injections are the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows and the fine lines that form at the side of the eyes, often referred to as crow’s feet.
Botox injections can also be used to smooth out horizontal lines on the forehead, treat under the eyes, smooth fine lines around the mouth, prevent dimpling on the chin, and even help with teeth grinding when inserted into the jaw angle. With many options available for Botox treatment, patients need to be careful that they are smart about how many areas to treat at once. Botox works by relaxing the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles when they contract. If too many muscles are relaxed from Botox treatment, the patient’s face can appear frozen.
The time needed between Botox treatments will vary by individual, with most people finding they need to go back in 3 to 6 months. Additional Botox treatments should not be completed any less than three months after the previous treatment to ensure that the muscles don’t develop resistance to the treatment. Patients who regularly receive Botox treatments might find that after a while they can drag out the time between appointments, making them less frequent.
